When the temperature drops to below 40 degrees and the days are short, nothing makes me happier than a big mug of hot tea! Except maybe a snack to go with my tea, I’ll never say no to themed snacks.
I come from a family of biscotti lovers so we never had scones around the house when I was growing up. I’m not saying that you have to pick one or the other and be exclusive with it but we seemed to be. Because of this, the only time I enjoyed scones was when we went out for tea so in my mind, they are tea-time delicacy.
After a near tropical December, we’ve been having our first few weeks of winter in Virginia. This means it’s time for me to start making more tea snacks! First up – lemon chocolate scones. These scones are enormous and full of chocolate. If you want an extra chocolate-y kick, throw chocolate chips into the batter! They have a really subtle lemon taste that pairs nicely with dark or bittersweet chocolate.
What’s your favorite cold weather tea time snack?
- 3 Cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 (100g) Cup white sugar
- 5 Teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 Teaspoon salt
- 3/4 Cup butter
- 1 Large egg
- 1 Cup milk
- 2 Tablespoons of fresh lemon zest
- 8 Ounces bittersweet chocolate for topping, melted

- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- Cover a baking sheet with a non stick silicon mat or parchment paper and set aside
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt
- Cut in the butter
- In a small bowl, beat the egg and milk until combined and frothy
- Add lemon zest
- Pour milk and egg mixture into flour mixture, stir until moist
- Transfer dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead 2-3 turns, until dough becomes less sticky
- Roll dough into a ½ inch thick circle and cut into 8 wedges
- Place wedges on prepared surface and bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown
- Once scones are completely cooled, drizzle with chocolate
