I took a break from blogging last week to focus on my day job and give thanks for all of the good in my life. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the busiest days of the year in eCommerce so I can’t enjoy a long weekend like everyone else but I do carve time out to enjoy some good food and family time.
This year I especially had a lot to give thanks for. We’ve had Onyx for almost two months and I can’t believe we didn’t take the leap into pet-ownership earlier. This year’s other blessing was getting engaged. By this time next year I’ll be married to my best friend and planning our first married Christmas. Can you tell I’m excited?
Wedding planning is well underway and this week, our save the dates arrived! Plus the website is live so now it’s official. Our save the date isn’t the only one on my fridge though, so I knew the time had come to create a uniform set of fridge magnets to tie the collage of smiling photos together. Enter the DIY gold animal magnets.
These magnets are a great weekend project for a couple reasons. For starters they are adorable. I’m a big fan of gold accents so when I was able to add some to my fridge, I was very happy. The steps are simple and the magnets are easy to make in large quantities so if like me you’ve got a dozen save the dates on your fridge, you’ll never run out of magnets.
Step 1. Assemble your supplies
- A dozen small plastic animals
- Gold paint
- Small paint brush
- Sharp serrated knife
- One pack of ¾ inch diameter magnets
- Gorilla glue
Step 2. Prepare the animals
Carefully cut the animals in half using the serrated knife. Paint the animals and let dry completely. Depending on your choice of pens, you may have to do a couple coats. Let animals dry completely (overnight usually does the trick).
Step 3. Finish magnets
Using the Gorilla glue, attach the flat base of the animals to the magnets. Use less glue than you might think to use because Gorilla glue will expand as it dries. Let magnets dry for 2-3 hours before using them on the fridge.
